Why parents pick it

When the school plans a Heritage Day, four friends volunteer to set up its history room, and an old trunk turns up a map that could give away a big secret. It's a story about a question many children face: can you be a good friend to someone while there's something you can't tell them? There is no villain. Everyone in it is just curious, and the children work out how to stay honest.

Good fit if your child…

  • likes mysteries with old maps, dusty boxes and clues in photographs
  • has a friend who asks lots of questions and notices everything
  • is learning that a secret can belong to someone else, not just you

From Chapter 1

Principal Chen's voice crackled over the morning announcements. "One more thing before first period. In six weeks, Oxford Elementary will host our very first Heritage Day, celebrating the history of our school and our city. The Historical Learning Center will be the centerpiece of the event, and we're looking for student volunteers to help prepare it."

Maya's hand shot up before Principal Chen had even finished the sentence, even though nobody could see her raise it over the loudspeaker.

"You're doing that face again," Jasper said from the desk next to hers.

"What face?"

"The one where you already have a plan and a color-coded folder for it."

By lunch, Maya had signed up, dragging Brandt, Carter, and Jasper along with her. "The Learning Center hasn't been touched since we helped save it two years ago," she said, unwrapping her sandwich with the efficiency of someone who considered lunch a minor interruption. "There are boxes back there nobody's opened since the old display cases went in."

The opening of the book, as it is told on the Pal.

What happens

Principal Chen announces Oxford Elementary's first Heritage Day, and Maya signs up Brandt, Carter, and Jasper to help prepare the Historical Learning Center. While sorting dusty boxes with Ms. Walker, they open an old wooden trunk and unroll a hand-drawn map of the school grounds with two small words beside the creek: "Old entrance." Sharp-eyed Jasper notices right away, and Ms. Walker knows the map cannot simply go on display.

As friends Aria and Diego join the volunteers and start asking questions, Brandt and Carter look for ways to protect the otters without telling lies. Listeners will enjoy a school mystery and think about honesty, curiosity, and what it means to be trusted.

For the grown-up

What they get from it. Children see a way to answer curious friends with true things instead of lies, and hear that some secrets are not yours alone to share. They also see that a good friend can trust you without knowing everything.

Before you play it. It stays gentle, with no danger. The tension is about near-misses, such as a friend tapping a hollow-sounding floor, and the brothers feel nervous about keeping a secret from friends they like.

Ask your child afterwards:

  • Brandt and Maya gave Jasper true answers without telling him everything. Is that different from lying?
  • Aria said she doesn't need to know everything about her friends to know they're good ones. What do you think of that?
  • Is there something that's not only yours to share? What might it be?
