Friends and voice messages
A Peko Pal can exchange voice messages with people you have approved — and only with them. There is no discovery, no requests from strangers, and no way for your child to add someone from the device.
Approving a friend
Friends are set up between parents, in the Peko Pal app: open your child's page and choose Add a Friend under Friends. Both sides approve before anything can be sent in either direction, and either side can withdraw that approval at any time — which immediately stops messages both ways.
You can see every conversation your child has, in the Chats tab. Nothing is hidden from you.
On the device
Approved friends appear in the Friends section of the main menu — press the power button, then left or right until your Peko Pal says "Main menu: Friends". Up and down read the names out; the action button opens that person.
People with something new waiting are read out first, so a child who just wants to know "did anyone send me anything" only has to press down once.
If your child has no approved friends, there is no Friends section at all. The menu only offers what the device can actually do.
Voice messages
Opening a friend lets your child hear what that person sent and record a reply. The recording is deliberate: it happens while the button is held, and the logo glows steady green the whole time the microphone is capturing — the same green used by every app that listens.
A waiting message announces itself with a flashing amber logo, so an unopened message is visible across a room without the device making a sound. Even while the Peko Pal is switched off, it checks for new messages every few minutes and keeps a single dim amber light on while one is waiting. The Power, battery and charging article has the details.
Calls
Some devices can also place live calls to a friend. Whether calls are available depends on your device and plan, and your Peko Pal will tell your child plainly if they are not. When a call is coming in, the logo flashes amber and the device rings.
Good to know
- Messages and friendships follow the child, not the hardware. Replacing or upgrading a device keeps their friends.
- The walkie-talkie is a separate app with its own channels. It is not the same thing as Friends, and it does not use the approved-friends list.
