## What happens

Late summer in Berkeley brings college students back to Strawberry Creek Park, and Brandt and Carter notice something strange: the usually clear creek has taken on a reddish tint. Following the color upstream, they meet two curious creek explorers, Aria and Diego, who keep a nature journal and know every bend of the water. The four join forces as investigators, trying not to give away the secret of their otter friends.

The trail leads them from the park toward the university campus, past fences, signs and scientists in lab coats. Listeners enjoy a gentle science mystery that celebrates curiosity, careful observation, new friendships and respect for the nature in a city creek.

## From Chapter 1

> The morning sun filtered through the oak trees as Brandt finished tying his shoelaces on the front porch. Carter bounced impatiently beside him, his backpack already secured and ready for their adventure.

> "Come on, Brandt! Oliver said he'd show us the new tunnel extension today," Carter said, practically vibrating with excitement.
>
> "I know, I know," Brandt replied, double-checking that his notebook and pencils were in his pack. "But we need to be careful. Mom thinks we're just going to the park to play."
>
> "We are going to the park," Carter grinned. "We're just also visiting our secret friends."
>
> The brothers set off down the familiar path toward Strawberry Creek Park. The late-summer air was warm but not too hot, perfect for exploring. As they walked, Brandt noticed something unusual.
