# Recorder

Recorder lets your child record their voice, a song, or anything else, and hear it played straight back. Hold the action button, talk, let go, and the recording plays. Every recording is kept, so your child can flip back through them and play them in funny voices.

## The buttons

| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Action button (hold) | A beep means it's listening. Talk, then let go: a boop plays, the recording is saved and plays back. |
| Action button (quick press) | Plays the latest recording again. A quick press while one is playing stops it. |
| Direction pad up | Plays the recording before this one. On the oldest, it plays that one again. |
| Direction pad down | Plays the recording after this one. On the newest, it plays that one again. |
| Direction pad left | Plays the recording in a deep monster voice. Press right to go back to normal. |
| Direction pad left, twice quickly | Asks "Press the action button to delete this recording." Press the action button within a few seconds to delete it; anything else keeps it. |
| Direction pad right | Plays the recording in a squeaky chipmunk voice. Press left to go back to normal. |
| Volume buttons | Louder and quieter, as in every app. |
| Power button | A quick press leaves Recorder and returns to the main menu. See [Getting around your Peko Pal](https://www.pekopal.com/guide/navigation). |

While the action button is held, the direction pad does nothing.

## What you'll hear and see

- The logo glows **steady green** and a short **beep** plays the moment the button goes down. That means it's recording: start talking.
- A **boop** after letting go means the recording is saved. It plays right after.
- While a recording plays, the logo moves with the sound. Otherwise it twinkles, waiting. See [What the glowing logo means](https://www.pekopal.com/guide/status-light).
- A short **two-note chime** means there's nothing to play yet. Hold the button to make the first recording.
- After a double press of left, the logo **breathes yellow** while the Pal waits for the action button to confirm a delete. A short falling sound means the recording was deleted.
- "Recorder is full. Delete a recording to make room." means there's no space for a new recording. Delete one (double press left, then the action button) and try again.

## Settings in the Peko Pal app

Recorder has no settings.

## Tips

- The beep and the click of the button letting go are cut from the recording, so it starts and ends cleanly.
- Let go once you've finished talking: the very end of what's said as the button comes up is trimmed with the click.
- A new recording never replaces an old one, and Recorder never deletes recordings by itself. It holds about 18 hours. When it's full, holding the button says "Recorder is full. Delete a recording to make room." and nothing is recorded until one is deleted.
- A press shorter than about a second counts as a quick press, not a recording.
- The silly voices only change how a recording plays. The saved recording stays as it was.
- Recorder lowers background noise and evens out the volume, so quiet voices come through clearly. Speaking from about a hand's length away works best.
- Recorder always opens on the newest recording, in the normal voice.

## Good to know

Recorder works without Wi-Fi and has no AI. The microphone is only on while the button is held. Recordings are saved on the Peko Pal's SD card and are never uploaded or sent anywhere.
